Hydraulic fracturing (also known as fracking or hydrofracking) is a process that is being used in some areas, such as Pennsylvania, to extract natural gas from shale gas fields. The earth is split by the injection of water mixed with hundreds of different chemicals. The process is considered by many to have serious environmental and health consequences and is even suspected to have caused earthquakes.
