War is peace is a phrase that George Orwell
used in "1984" to satirise totalitarian regimes' claim
that only through constant war can we ensure the peace. It is
an example of what he called doublethink - the ability to hold
two diametrically opposing and conflicting ideas simultaneously.
The phrase rings as true today as it did when he wrote the novel
back in 1948.
